Heaps of History in Salisbury – New Chapters

Steeped in history, the medieval cathedral city of Salisbury has been drawing residents for over 5000 years. Since the iron age hill fort of Old Sarum, to the modern thriving city of today. The result is a city overflowing in historical importance, with remains of Salisbury’s past still in abundance today.

From the weaving cobbled streets to the extraordinary cathedral in the heart of the city, the rich heritage of Salisbury is impossible to miss. Whether you fancy climbing the UK’s largest church spire, or prefer an afternoon tea alongside Charter Market, you are following in the footsteps of locals spanning hundreds of years.

Just a short stroll from the Old Town is our collection of 197 homes at Chapters. The site was once home to one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in the UK and dates back to 1813. It was vacant for many years and unfortunately suffered severe deterioration and vandalism. But now, it has had a total overhaul creating a new community for over 55s, alongside the beautifully restored 19th Century Finch House. The range of apartments and cottages sit within yellow-brick buildings, some Neo-Georgian, designed to complement the surrounding architecture. Residents will have everything at their fingertips, with an on-site bistro, activity studio and treatment rooms.

The name Chapters

The site, commonly referred to locally as the ‘Old Manor’, is very well known. Throughout the engagement period, we talked to lots of people regarding what it should be called moving forward. We had an overwhelming number of people asking for the site to be renamed to mark its new start and development – so that’s what we did.

Our first step was to give the site a name more befitting with the aspirations and the fresh regeneration of the development. The second was to make sure the name reflected the several phases the site has already undergone and will have as part of its construction. Finally, the third was to make reference to the rich history and culture of Salisbury itself.

Chapters, the overall name for the retirement village, encapsulates the theatrical association and culture of the City. It describes the new beginning and next chapter for the site; whilst also making reference to the Chapter House of Salisbury Cathedral. Which is actually home to the famous Magna Carta!
