Moving day can be stressful enough without having to worry about the wellbeing of your furry friends.

1. Prepare an overnight pet care kit

Trying to locate those essential items amongst mountains of boxes can be a bit of a nightmare, so it might be a good idea for you to prepare an overnight bag for your pet. It is useful to put their bed, food and any favourite toys they may have in a separate bag. Keeping as much of their routine as possible will help to make them feel settled. 

2. Keep your pets away from moving day

If you’ve ever been on holiday and your pet has seen you packing your suitcase, you’ll recognise the anxious look they give you and they constantly follow you around to see if they are coming with you. Packing up their entire home will amplify these feelings, so it may be less stressful for you and them to spend the day with a friend or at another place they feel happy. 

3. A secure and comfortable area for your pets

Pets find comfort in knowing they have a safe space which is theirs, so in a new home it could make them feel anxious if they don’t have a secure and comfortable place to curl up and relax. If your pet joins you at your new home once you’ve finished moving make sure to find a quiet corner to put their bed and toys in that they can make their own. If your pet is staying with you on moving day making sure they have a safe and quiet location away from the hustle of boxes and people will help them to feel more settled.

4. Register your pet with a new vet

If you’re moving to a new area, don’t forget to register your pet with a local vet. It is also a good idea to check with your microchip company about how to change your address details, especially while your pet is getting used to living in a new area.  

5. Introducing your pet to their local area 

When you first take your dog out for a walk be sure to keep them on the lead so they can explore safely. A new area may be daunting, especially if you’re both familiarising yourself with local walks. 

There are a few considerations when moving with a cat. If they enjoy being outdoors, it is a good idea to introduce them to their new area slowly. Keeping them indoors for the first two weeks will help them get used to their new surroundings before you let them outside.   

It may also be a good idea to let your neighbours at your new and old home know to keep an eye out for your pet in the first few weeks.
